Studios revving up retro

Period films will dominate fall release schedule

NEW YORK -- For those ready to move past the endless stream of dark dramas from fall 2007, get ready for a new barrage -- from the 1960s, the 1940s and the 1780s.

Studios are preparing to unleash a hailstorm of period movies -- in broad terms, films set in an era other than the current -- in the fall, at times turning the multiplex circa 2008 into a veritable cinematic museum.

The films range from large studio productions (Universal/Clint Eastwood's 1920s missing-child drama "Changeling" and Fox/Baz Luhrmann's World War II epic "Australia") to specialty releases (Searchlight's midcentury Southern tale "The Secret Life of Bees" and Miramax's 1960s Catholic-school drama "Doubt"). They veer from costume dramas (the 18th century Keira Knightley quill-and-wig extravaganza "The Duchess") to political sagas (Ron Howard's "Frost/Nixon") to 1950s family dramas (the Sam Mendes-Leonardo DiCaprio collaboration "Revolutionary Road") to biopics (Gus Van Sant's "Milk") to yet more WWII throwbacks (Ed Zwick's "Defiance," Mikael Hafstrom's "Shanghai" and Spike Lee's "Miracle at St. Anna").

"It seems like Hollywood is merging with the History Channel," media critic Robert Thompson noted wryly.

The latest wave of period movies is notable for several reasons. These movies are coming all at once -- scores of pictures crammed into a period of just 10 or 12 weeks. The stakes and expectations are higher because the overall number of fall specialty releases is expected to be down by as much as 25% from the nearly 70 titles released last year. And these period films are being released as questions linger from last season about whether the audience can find enough with which to identify in fall releases.

That combination is enough to make some executives nervous. "It's a lot of period movies, and it's going to be a question of who'll be able to connect," said one high-ranking specialty exec releasing a period film.

Nonetheless, development execs point to reasons why historical is suddenly fashionable despite the risks.

In a time when summer releases have trumped fall movies on spectacle, they say, it's a chance for films to chisel out a new niche. Boxoffice Mojo president Brandon Gray suggests that period pictures are in effect the fall's answer to the summer tentpole.

"A movie set in period can be a selling point because it transports you to another world without being a fantasy or relying on big special effects," he said.

Period movies can also allow a story to be told in ways that contemporary-set movies can't tell them. "In a period movie you can strip out modern American irony and ambiguity and get away with it," Thompson said. "A contemporary movie that has absolutes would seems old-fashioned. But if you set it during a previous time, you can make it credible."

Last year, such movies as "Michael Clayton," "Rendition" and "In the Valley of Elah" took on current issues through a contemporary lens. This crop looks at equally large themes -- the corruption of power ("Changeling"), the innocent victims of war ("Australia," "St. Anna," "Defiance") and the slipperiness of truth ("Doubt," "Frost/Nixon") -- but uses the distancing mechanism of period.

But for all the advantages, will consumers bite on stories that often take place before many of them were born? Execs acknowledge the challenges.

"The situations won't be as relatable, so you need to find something relatable that transcends the era," said Fox co-president of theatrical marketing Pam Levine, whose company will try to turn "Australia" into a wide play.

Marketing guru Terry Press, who at DreamWorks successfully marketed such period films as "Gladiator" and "Seabiscuit," also sees a fine line. "You don't want to confuse period with old-fashioned (in your marketing). That's the quickest way to lose a big part of the audience."

For a "Gladiator" spot, DreamWorks cut footage from the film with NFL highlights to give it a modern feel. Miramax, which undertook a similar promotion for "Gangs of New York" under the Weinsteins six years ago, will try to bridge the historical and modern in "Brideshead Revisited," the class-themed WWII movie. "We want to show people that the issues of class and being an outsider are still very relatable today," Miramax marketing chief Jason Cassidy said.

No matter how the material gets played, though, there might be a commercial ceiling. Notes one development exec, "American audiences like occasional period movies, but they do want them every weekend?"

Razorlight preview new song at surprise gig

Razorlight performed a new, currently-untitled song at London's Union Chapel tonight (May 28) as part of a surprise four-song set.

The group teamed up to play at drummer Andy Burrows' charity event for Winchester children's hospice Naomi House.

Razorlight also performed three singles from 2006's 'Razorlight' after the new track, playing 'Before I Fall To Pieces', 'In The Morning' and 'America'.

During an earlier set featuring tracks from Burrows' solo charity album 'The Colour Of My Dreams', the drummer was joined by musicians including Muse's Dom Howard on drums, Guillemots' Fyfe Dangerfield on keyboards and Editors' Tom Smith on guitar and vocals.

Burrows was also joined by The Bluetones' Mark Morriss for three songs, including a run-through of the Britpop band's 1996 hit 'Slight Return' to the delight of the crowd.

Poet Peter Dixon, who wrote the pieces Burrows put to music on his album, also performed two short poems at the event.

The stage in the chapel was decked out with oversize children's alphabet blocks and a cut-out of Donald Duck, while a tin foil moon hung spotlighted above it.

Andy Burrows and friends performed:

'Spanish Boats'
'Who Wants Me Now'
'Boxes'
'Winter'
'Big Chief Grandad'
'Missionary Sales'
'Peace'
'Lighthouse Men'
'Teacher Goodbye'

Coldplay album set to top UK chart

Coldplay's new album is set to top the UK charts this Sunday (June 14) despite only being out for three days.

'Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends' sold 125,000 copies on its' day of release yesterday (June 12), making it certain to top the charts ahead of The Fratellis, Neil Diamond and Paul Weller.

Music retail chain HMV are now predicting the album to sell around 250,000 copies by the time the chart is announced at 7pm on Sunday.

HMV spokesperson Gennaro Castaldo said: "This rate of sales exceeds even our optimistic forecasts, and shows how massively popular a band Coldplay remain despite having been away for the best part of three years. Aside from having a substantial core fanbase, Coldplay are one of the few acts that can genuinely connect with a much wider audience.

"While we've also been selling large quantities of the album online and as a download at hmv.com, this clearly shows that there is still a massive public appetite to buy CDs from record stores across the country. HMV placed one of its largest-ever orders in anticipation of this release."

Coldplay's last album, 2005's 'X&Y', sold 465,000 copies in its first week of release in the UK.

The winners of the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest, British quartette Bucks Fizz were, throughout the early '80s, regarded among the most successful bands of their eRA, chalking up no less than nine Top 20 hits 'tween 1981-1983, including trey chart-toppers, "Qualification Your Mind Up" (their Eurovision winner), "The Land of Make Believe," and "My Camera Never Lies." The band's summate chart record includes 20 Top 40 entries, and it was 1988 ahead Bucks Fizz at long last stopped up marking hits -- not a tough record for a mathematical group that did non regular live earlier the Eurovision Song Contest. Bucks Fizz were the brainchild of the production/writing team of Nicola Martin and Andy Hill, and were formed specifically to perform a sung the duet had written for the contest. Adhering to the two male, two female formula that had proven so successful at the contest in the eld since ABBA's 1974 triumph, the group lined up as Jay Aston, Cheryl Baker, Bobby G, and Mike Nolan and, with Eurovision under their belted ammunition, they were to establish unstoppable. Three further hits during 1981 -- "Piece of the Action," "One of Those Nights," and "Demesne of Make Believe" were attended by an eponymous LP that reached number 14 on the U.K. chart; into 1982, the Are You Ready album went Top Ten, patch "My Camera Never Lies," "At present Those Days Are Gone," and "If You Can't Stand the Heat" maintained the band's singles success.

The Hand Cut album and four-spot strike singles -- "Run for Your Life," "When We Were Young," "London Town," and "Rules of the Game" -- brought the band interchangeable success in 1983. But slowly diminishing chart positions were root to show. The last deuce 45s ailing at numbers pool 34 and 57, severally, patch tied a Christmas Greatest Hits album only when reached number 25. Bucks Fizz appeared to be zippy back, however, as summer 1984's "Talking in Your Sleep" at least marched into the Top 20. But two further underperformers, "Golden Days" and "I Hear Talk," saw the band's headliner worsen at one time over again, patch a road chance event in brief ahead Christmas left wing Nolan ill injured and necessitated the cancellation of the group's stream tour. Worse was to come, as Jay Aston deceased in 1985; he was replaced by Shelley Preston and Bucks Fizz continued scoring minor hits -- interspersed by the periodic major one (1986's "Unexampled Beginning" reached number octet) until 1988's "Heart of Stone" at long last ended their chart career.

Since that time, Bucks Fizz have remained a going concern, although never-ending lineup changes make seen some 15 or so different singers pass through the ranks, including previous Dollar frontman David Van Day. Of the founding members, Baker foreswear in 1993 and Nolan in 1986, departure Bobby G alone to link the current incarnation to its yesteryear. Nolan and Van Day later formed their possess version of the band, Bucks Fizz featuring Mike Nolan. They released several singles, and as well re-recorded a turn of old hits for diverse compilations. Nolan later left this ring, only Van Day continued on as Bucks Fizz and, following several highly publicised effectual tussles with Bobby G, now tours as David Van Day's Bucks Fizz Show. In 2004, the mid-'80s card of Baker, Nolan, Bobby G, and Preston re-formed for a handful of shows around the tone ending of the band's The Ultimate Anthology collection; iI years later, following the coming into court of the Lost Masters rarities album, another reunion saw the quaternion original members (plus Preston) reconvene to record a version of the Proclaimers' "500 Miles" for the Comic Relief polemonium van-bruntiae.
